Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia (BCWA) was founded in 1986 by medical specialists to provide peer support for breast cancer patients and survivors. We were registered in 1988 as a non-profit tax-exempt organisation under the Registrar of Societies Malaysia.

We are a member of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), ABC Global Alliance and Reach to Recovery International (RRI).

PATRON

Yang Berbahagia Puan Sri Datin Seri Dato’ Akmal Abdul Salam D.I.M.P

Yang Berbahagia Puan Sri Datin Seri Dato’ Akmal Abdul Salam has consistently dedicated her time and effort towards charity work. She was Patron of NCD Alliance Malaysia from 2014 – 2016, and has been the Patron of BCWA since 2005. As Patron, Puan Sri also represented BCWA as a plenary speaker at the 2013 Reach To Recovery International Breast Cancer Support Conference in Cape Town, South Africa.

In her previous position as Chairman of Puteri DRB Hicom (1998-2005), she was instrumental in engaging the staff of the company to help the needy. She is also the founder and Chairman of Beauty Unlimited Malaysia Sdn Bhd which organises and manages events, weddings, and private functions.

She was conferred the title of Dato’ Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Pahang in 2005.

Puan Sri is married to Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Mohd Saleh Sulong and they are blessed with three sons, two daughters-in-law and nine precious grandchildren.

Puan Sri’s hobbies include singing, dancing, baking, travelling and socialising.

  • With more than 15 years of experience in local and international brand building and expansion, Kim was previously a General Manager at a MNC company. She recently completed her MBA in (International Business) and believes that we should thrive beyond breast cancer. Kim was introduced to BCWA by her breast surgeon, where she found peers and a group of warriors who could relate to the challenges of living with breast cancer. Upon completing her treatment, she enrolled with BCWA’s Reach to Recovery training as a volunteer counsellor.

    Kim believes we all have a part to play in changing and inspiring the wider society, so that breast cancer patients everywhere can access the support that they need and deserve.

    Thanks to the strong foundation laid by previous board members, ongoing work by a diverse committee and an enthusiastic team, Kim confidently takes on her new role as BCWA President and continues to advocate for the Breast Cancer community in Malaysia.

  • An industry professional with 25+ years of working experience in corporate communication, employee engagement and customer service, Nel is the BCWA’s Vice President for 2022/24. Currently serving as the general manager of a biomedical engineering services company in Malaysia, Nel is also a Breast Cancer survivor, which inspires her to serve BCWA.

    Nel hopes to improve affordable access to breast cancer care in Malaysia, improve financial planning and literacy for those affected by breast cancer and raise education levels on managing mental and physical wellness while living with breast cancer. In addition to her various qualifications, she is a certified translator (English and Malay languages) as well as a a certified corporate trainer specializing in communication, customer service, leadership, and essential skills.

  • Despite the challenges and complexities associated with combatting breast cancer, Swee Lee understands that the solutions are quick responses built on the foundations of accurate data, effective support networks and a positive attitude. A breast cancer survivor of more than 10 years herself, Swee Lee personally understands the ways in which cancer can upend the best laid plans in life.

    As a life planning advisor in the insurance industry and secretary for the BCWA, she displays a desire to fight for breast cancer patients everywhere as an advocate for their unmet needs. She believes that with the world’s many unknowns, it simply matters how we react.

  • Beginning his professional career in the Audit sector, Sam has amassed close to 30 years of experience in the areas of general management, finance, and business improvement. He joined Tanjong PLC Group in the mid-1990s where he held various roles, primarily in Finance. Since mid-2022, he has found himself working with a leading Logistics Group currently undergoing the process for a public listing.

    Sam is also a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and is now the BCWA Treasurer.

  • An accomplished Human Resources professional with 27+ years of working experience, Anne has contributed her expertise to various other organizations around the region. Anne holds a Degree in Human Resources and is currently attached to a reputable, regional Hospital in a leadership role providing important business HR advice.

    Adopting a people-first approach built on compassion, Anne has a desire to be present for people in need, persevering to leave the people she encounters, better for having met her. Her life philosophy follows what Maya Angelou said, “People don’t always remember what you said or did but they will always remember how you make them feel”.

  • With an extensive background including 25+ years in retail, merchandizing and Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, Caryn Loh has continually served as a BCWA committee member for over 3 years. In addition to her current role as Managing Director of Watsons Malaysia, Caryn believes in being an active member of the community. She exemplifies this with her work in other non-profit organisations where she personally oversees on-the-ground support operations initiatives.

    As a member of the BCWA board, Caryn offers guidance in subjects pertaining to women’s health and support. She is excited to continue supporting the mission of championing women’s issues everywhere.

  • With 20+ years of experience in scaling startups, disrupting the norm, and living a life driven by purpose, PC began her career as a professional certified accountant. Now, she is looking to make those same disruptions with a transition to healthcare. She strives to see changes that make healthcare more accessible for everyone who requires the services and elevate the quality of care in and for the nation.

  • As a Founder and Senior Partner of Messrs. Sim & Rahman, Advocates & Solicitors, Sim Wen Yee serves as a committee member for the Breast Cancer Welfare Association (BCWA). She brings 10+ years of legal experience in the specialties of Wills, the Grant of Probate, Letter Administration, Estate Administration, Property and Company Law. Her firm operates locally in Malaysia but has since expanded internationally to include countries such as Singapore, Canada, Australia and China.

    Sim and her firm are the recipients of multiple awards pertaining to the legal trade. She personally has served as an executive member of various business and entrepreneurship-related organizations in both decision-making and advisory roles.

  • Cherry is the co-founder and managing partner of Hexa-Communications, an integrated marketing communication agency specialising in public relations, digital and social media. A multi-award-winning health communicator, Cherry has collaborated with multiple healthcare institutions in Malaysia and Singapore through integrated network agencies. She has worked extensively with pharmaceutical companies in the Southeast Asia region, playing a key role in managing projects across an array of business divisions, including disease awareness campaigns and product launches related to Oncology.

    Since 2018, Cherry has supported the Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia (BCWA) in various capacities to improve the health outcomes and experiences of patients, their loved ones, and caregivers. Through her role with the BCWA, she hopes to help raise the profile of the organisation and better support the breast cancer community in Malaysia through awareness, education and community outreach.
